Carl Müllerhartung, actually: Müller-Hartung (* May 19, 1834 in Stadtsulza; † June 11, 1908 in Berlin-Charlottenburg) was a Thuringian cantor, music teacher and composer.

Carl Müllerhartung was the son of the Sulza cantor Johann Christian Müller and his wife, a Hartung by birth. In Eisenach he was taught by Friedrich Kühmstedt. He then held positions as music director at a theater in Dresden and as city and court cantor in Eisenach. He was appointed professor in 1863.

Franz Liszt helped him to be appointed music director in Weimar in 1865, where he became an important figure in the city’s musical life. From 1869 he was also Kapellmeister at the court theater. The Weimar Orchestra School, founded by Müllerhartung in 1872, was the forerunner of today’s University of MusicFRANZ LISZT Weimar. This took place in the former Franciscan monastery.

Müllerhartung wrote secular and sacred choral works, songs, orchestral pieces and three choral sonatas for organ. His best-known work is the song “Thüringen, holdes Land” with lyrics by Ernst Viktor Schellenberg. (wikipedia)
